VeloCloud Edge Activation Guide

VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud™ Edge 6x0 Overview

This section provides an overview of the 6x0 SD-WAN Edge device:

Model Number: 6x0, this QSG applies to 610, 620, 640, and 680
Part Numbers: Edge 610, 620, 640, 680

This device provides:
6 Gigabit Ethernet connections, LAN/WAN configurable,
Two SFP WAN connections (1Gb SFP on Edge 610), (1/10 SFP+ on Edge 620, 640, 680)
Integrated Wi-Fi

The following two sections provide a description of the SD-WAN Edge 6x0 device.

Prior to activating the Edge:

  • The ports marked GE1 and GE2 are configured to provide a DHCP server and are recommended for LAN connectivity.
  • The ports marked GE3-GE6 and SFP1, SFP2 are for WAN connectivity and will request a DHCP address plus attempt to build an SD-WAN overlay.
Step 1: Connect the Power

Connect the power adapter to the AC power outlet and connect the other end of the adapter to the power port on the Edge. When the Edge powers ON, verify that the status LED on the front of the Edge is illuminated.

Step 3: Follow Email Instructions

If you received an email from your IT administrator, follow instructions in the email to complete the Edge activation.

Step 2: Connect to the Internet

Connect one of the default WAN ports
(GE3-6 or SFP1-2) to an available Internet connection. (SFP modules are NOT included). Note: The Edge is configured by default to acquire a DHCP IP address from the ISP on the WAN (uplink). When the WAN connection is fully operational, the LED on the front of the Edge is green.

Step 4: Connect Local Devices

Connect local devices such as computers and switches to the GE1 or GE2 ports, or connect through the Edge’s WiFi.

Back Panel and Side Connections

The back and side panel connections are listed below:

VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud™ Edge 610 Overview
  1. Power Connections - The power connection is threaded, so the power cord can be secured to the box. The power specifications for the AC/DC power adapter are:
    • AC Input: 100 - 240V, 50-60Hz
    • DC Output: 12V
  2. Default LAN Connections - The ports marked GE1, GE2, are default LAN connections.
  3. Default WAN Connections - The ports marked GE3-6 or SFP1-2 are default WAN connections.
  4. Wireless WAN Connections - The two side USB parts can be used for external USB modems
  5. Reset Button - Resets the SD-WAN Edge device to factory settings.

Front Panel Light

Edge 610 LED

There is on indicator light on the front panel.

  1. Service Indicator - Displays the status of the unit, the WAN connection and the VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud service. The light has the following status colors:
    • Red- There is no active WAN connection.
    • Yellow - There is an Internet connection, but the device has not been activated, or the VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud service is not active.
    • Green - A valid Internet connection and SD-WAN tunnel is detected (via one of the WAN ports) and the device is communicating with VCO
    • Blue - The device is a functioning standby in a High Availability (HA) configuration.

The Service Indicator is also used to indicate some system functions in progress:

    • White – Initial power-on and boot sequence.
    • Flashing blue – A system reset, or a software update is in progress.
    • Flashing white – Identifies a function invoked from the SD-WAN Orchestrator.
    • Flashing red – The device has detected a hardware failure.

Network Configuration

The SD-WAN Edge can be configured as a standalone device or paired with a similar device in a High Availability configuration. See the High Availability section in the SD-WAN Orchestrator online documentation for more information.

User Interface

The device user interface (UI) can be accessed at or at the default IP address of (via one of the default LAN ports, GE1 or GE2, or through the WiFi connection).

The WiFi default SSID is shown on the Overview Page under “Switched Interfaces / Wireless”. This SSID will default to “velocloud-XXXXXXX” where “XXXXXXX” is the full seven digits of the service tag. (The service tag can be found on the sticker located on the bottom of the box). The default password for the WiFi connection is “vcsecret”.

The device UI includes local web pages (Overview, Properties and Reset Settings), as well as a diagnostic dump button that provides troubleshooting functions and information about the interfaces.

Important Note: The UI should only be used for initial configuration and troubleshooting when the Internet is not available. The device UI is not expected to be used during normal operations since all of the information and configurations are also available through the SD-WAN Orchestrator.

Edge Overview Page

The Overview page provides the status of your Routed Interfaces (WAN) and Switched Interfaces (LAN) connections. The top half of the screen displays a diagram of the device. If connections are active, green indicator lights will display on the hardware diagram (in this case, GE1 is a valid LAN connection and GE3 is a valid WAN connection). Next to the device image are two buttons, Overview and Details. Click the Details button to display WAN and LAN connection status information.

Also, on the Overview page, underneath the device diagram, the status of the WAN and LAN connections display. In this area, you can change the display from Connected, Both, or Unconnected by clicking the respective buttons.

If you click a WAN connection, a properties page for that connection opens. (See the WAN Interface Properties section for more information).

Note: From the Overview page, you can click the Reset Settings button to open this respective page, or the Download Diagnostic Bundle button to obtain a diagnostic dump file.

WAN Interface Properties

If you click a WAN connection from the Overview page, a properties page for that connection displays (see image below). From the Properties page, you can view status information and make changes to the connection's properties. For example, you can specify a static IP address for the interface or select a PPPoE for the connection. However, it is recommended that you enter static and PPPoE values using the Device Settings override on the SD-WAN Orchestrator. When you finish making changes to the properties, click the Save Changes button. To return to the previous screen, click the << Return button.

Edge 610- Overview Page

The Diagnostics page provides several diagnostic tests including:

  • Basic monitoring information (such as bandwidth, signal strength, service, and GPS coordinates)
  • Some basic control buttons such as RESET
  • Pinging external IP addresses (e.g. to determine basic network connectivity
  • Evaluating the connectivity from the device to the VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud™ Service

Reset Settings

The Reset Settings page has buttons to initiate the following functions:

  • Identify - Flashes the device lights for 30 seconds to help you locate the SD-WAN Edge.
  • Restart Service - Restarts the VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud service.
  • Reboot - Initiates a reboot of the device. When the service light illuminates again, the device has completed the reboot process.
